Where to Train on Phuket: An Area-by-Area Guide

Phuket is an island 50 by 20 kilometres, and its sporting life is spread unevenly. Our catalog currently lists 173 places to train, and here is how they are distributed across the areas — with notes on who each area suits best.

Phuket Town — 67 gyms

The island's capital and the clear leader by gym count. Locals train here, so prices are noticeably lower than in the tourist areas and gyms stay open late. Plenty of classic weight rooms, fitness clubs and martial arts schools. The downside — the beaches are 20–40 minutes away.

Who it suits: those who live on the island full-time and want to train affordably and for real.

Chalong — 34 gyms

The historic centre of Muay Thai on Phuket. This is where the famous camps are — people fly in from all over the world to train here — and a whole ecosystem has grown around them: CrossFit boxes, MMA gyms, recovery studios and sports cafés. It has a true training-camp atmosphere — people walk the streets with wraps on their hands.

Who it suits: those coming to the island for martial arts and functional training.

Rawai — 20 gyms

The south of the island, a favourite of long-stay winter visitors. Quieter than Chalong, but the infrastructure is complete: serious weightlifting gyms, Muay Thai, yoga studios. Nai Harn and Ya Nui beaches are close by — you can pair a morning workout with a swim.

Who it suits: those who want to live by the sea but train seriously.

Patong and Kathu — 15 gyms each

Patong is the tourist centre with all its pros and cons: there are gyms, including the legendary boxing stadium, but prices are higher and the crowd changes constantly. Kathu is a quiet area between Patong and Phuket Town, home to several large fitness clubs.

Thalang — 13 gyms

The north of the island: spacious and green, close to the airport and to Bang Tao and Nai Yang beaches. This is where the modern sports complexes and big martial arts camps with their own grounds operate. The area is developing fast — more gyms open every year.

Who it suits: families and anyone who values space and new infrastructure.

Kamala, Karon, Kata and Surin

The beach areas of the west coast have fewer gyms — one to three per area. That does not mean there is nowhere to train: almost every hotel has a fitness zone, and a proper gym is usually 10–15 minutes away by bike.

How to choose

The rule is simple: housing first, gym second — but check them as a pair. Open the gym map, filter by the area where you plan to live and see what is within a 10-minute radius. If two areas on your shortlist offer similar housing, pick the one with the richer sports infrastructure: your motivation will thank you.
