CrossFit on Phuket: Boxes, Prices and How to Choose Yours

CrossFit on Phuket stopped being a niche thing long ago: functional training gyms operate all over the island, and in high season they are packed with winter expats and athletes on training camps. Here is how the local boxes work (that is what CrossFit gyms are called), what classes cost and how to pick a place you will actually want to come back to.

How the training works

The core format is a one-hour group class: a warm-up, a strength or skill block, and the WOD (workout of the day) — a short, intense piece done for time or rounds. Book ahead through the gym's app or messenger: classes are small, 8–15 people, so the coach can watch everyone's technique.

The island's main quirk is the heat. Most boxes are open-air or semi-open, so the best slots are in the morning (7:00–9:00) and evening (after 17:00). If humidity hits you hard, look for gyms with air-conditioned classes — those exist too.

Where to find the boxes

Functional gyms are spread across the island more evenly than fight gyms. Chalong is the classic choice: CrossFitters, fighters and triathletes all train side by side here. Rawai and Nai Harn — the laid-back south with small, friendly boxes. Phuket Town works well if you live in the city. On the west coast, look at Bang Tao, Kamala and Patong — gyms inside fitness clubs and hotels.

All options with photos, ratings and a map are in the gym catalog: filter the "CrossFit & functional training" category by your area.

What it costs

Price guide:

  • a drop-in class — 500 to 700 baht;
  • a 10-class pack — 4,000 to 5,500 baht;
  • monthly unlimited — 4,500 to 6,500 baht;
  • a personal session — 1,200 to 2,000 baht.

Almost every box discounts a month paid up front, and the first class is often free or half price.

If you are a beginner

A good box will not throw you into a general class on day one. Ask about an on-ramp or intro session — a short course covering the basics: squats, pulls, barbell work and gymnastics. And remember CrossFit's golden rule: every workout scales. Weights come down, pull-ups become band-assisted, and the same WOD is done by a first-timer and a competitive athlete alike.

How to choose your box

Come to a trial class and look at three things. The coach: do they ask about injuries, fix your technique, offer easier variations. The equipment: barbells, rings and ergs should be in working order, not "surviving the season". And the people: CrossFit runs on community — if the group hangs around chatting over a protein shake after the WOD, you have found the right place.

Where to start

Open the gym catalog and pick two or three boxes near home, and if you want to build technique one-on-one, browse coaches for functional training. A week of trial classes at different boxes will tell you more than any review.
